Hello everyone. Learning to use Wiki is fun. It is good to be able to collaborate with teachers and educators from around the world and to gain new perspectives from them.

It's a great web application. I love it!!

On the topic of WikiEd, It has been proven to be most useful and rewarding, bringing resources together and increasing one's knowledge and foresight.

This is a test reply in the Communication and interaction function of WikiEducator. I can see a lot of potential for this, particularly to negotiate content while writing open content materials in a collabortive environment and provide quality content that is consensus based.

The possibilities are endless to what can be achieved when great minds collaborate for the common good. Juan Medford

Education is progressive, it's great when professionals can converse together and share their opinion on similar topics, we will all learn from each other.

Yes I agree wholeheartedly. Dennis Bell

Hi Sanjaya,

I agree with your apreciation. WIkiEducator have as Juan described below "endeless possibilities". In my opinio, after you learn the basics, creativity plays an important role fot the use of this tool.

It is really a great opportunity for each Wikibuddy-Iam saying the right thing? to have where to run when things go either right or wrong with their pages, hence creating a harmonous environment of collaboration and mutual understanding... great development

I think we did the online workshop together - doing this rather late but checking out how to use this - rather intimidating for a layperson. Regards Nimrat

Yeah, I believe that developing lessons or modules for online classes should be a team effort and that the first thing to do is plan first what needs to be taught then proceed with the development of lessons or modules for online classes. I'm not sure what I think of LT yet. Sort of a regression in threaded discussion, why not just incorporate the worlds best threaded discussion we already have?

I must say though I have read a lot of discussion on Wikipedia over the past months, ever since I made my first tentative edit. The thread I was reading yesterday was on Drupal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Drupal  :-)

That's it from me. I have a confession. When I started this (at 3.00am in the morning last week as I headed for the airport) it was here in LT I thought I was supposed to be writing. Some of my chicken scratching comments are there, but no-one noticed them.

Hi Derek ...

It's a tough call - a Wiki is a wiki and it shouldn't try to grow up into something which it isn't. In that sense - the Wiki shouldn't try to replicate successful technologies like threaded discussion.

The challenge we were facing in WikiEducator - is that many new users were finding it difficult to communicate in a unstructured environment. Newbies were Folk were not sure where to place their reponses, how to start new discussions, forgetting to sign posts, not sure how to indent etc.

LQT has another interesting feature derived from the wiki way - namely the feature of archiving posts - which will encourage the community to remain actively engaged by writing these summaries. We'll see how this works.

LQT is very much still a standard wiki page - you can edit my post! (This of course will be duly recorded in the history.). LQT uses the standard wiki syntax which useful when discussing syntax etc.

For me LQT should be judged in terms of making it easier for folk to communicate within the wiki rather than comparing it to other dedicated technologies.

As a lay person it is an uphill task to learn so much in the time allotted however i think i will get there with lots of practice. i am glad to be introduced to wiki.

Testing, testing, testing...

Wayne,

At first glance, not being used to using threaded discussions, I'd say LT is an effective way to keep focused for a specific topic. Let's use it and see.

Now to go off-topic, it was great meeting you again, at the RCS luncheon (a bit formal, but there we are). Your talk went down very well. I know that my friend, Deborah, was impressed enough to put your name forward at the Judiciary Educational Committee as a presenter at one of the upcoming seminars for judges the committee organizes.

We are trying to be effective WikiAmbassadors...

Thanks for a lively lunchtime.

John

LQT is a great improvement on what we had before in terms of structuring discussions.

RE the RCS luncheon - I really enjoyed chatting about WikiEd. Wow - its great to have such effective WikiAmbassadors on our side! I'd love to chat about the project at the Judiciary Educational Committee.

Hope my "radical" views were not too lively <smile>

←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:

I like the idea of Liquid Threads, it makes it easy to follow, and contribute to, a specific discussion topic.

I share the same opinion as Linda. Liquid Threads simplify the communication and encourage "virtual talking"

Yeah, me too. It's easy to post new discussion threads. But I would also like to develop together with our school's Computer teachers a website for our school which we could also use for posting our online lessons or modules or which we could make into a virtual learning environment. I need trainings on developing a software for teaching Philippine Geography, History and Government for online classes using Moodle or maybe Blackboard or other platforms for e-learning.

Liquid threads are a great way of communicating in an environment to build up content through consensus. The ideas of all participants are available for comment, and new discussions can easily be made from existing treads. The threads are easy to follow and it is very easy to stay on topic.

←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:

This is a step up on the way talk pages have previously presented. As a scanner of written material it allows me to comprehend each thread and easily identify sub-threads or topics as they emerge.

←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:

So... I read the discussion and finally got that LT is liquid thread.... I'll keep reading...

It gets confusing when there are two acronyms used for the same word. Can we come up with one acronym for LiquidThread? Is it LQT or LT?

I hereby declare it to be LQT. :-)

LT or LQT, whatever, please introduce the acronym(s)in the WikiEducator Tutorial number 8. rz akinkanju

I suggest a glossary of acronyms and their meanings.. Chris Babowal

that could be your resource chris! ta, kelly

←In reply to Testing a reply (9) by Reflecting, above:

Well done! <smile> - we've really got to try harder not to speak with acronyms.

Sorry about that.

←In reply to Testing a reply (9) by Reflecting, above:

Right! The same happened to me. I was wondering all the time what "LT" was till I came to this post. Finally I could find out it stands for "Liquid Thread". I had read about it somewhere before but I couldn't associate right away.

It seems that WikiEducator's discussion forum was not as good as it is now with LT. I must say I found it a bit confusing but once you get used to it, you'll find it easy to grasp. At first, it was not very clear to me who the author of the post was.

Hi Joao,

Following your comment related with the usability of "LT", I found the use of different colours a little bit confusing.

←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:

I find LQT (official abreviation of liquid threads) somewhat like keeping notes on a debate. I guess you have to read all of them just to stay in topic since there are no headings for different discussions. Or does it mean that you open a new page each time the discussion drifts?

You can add headings wherever you want

Though normally a heading would be created at the start of a new thread. :-)

←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:

Wow! I think this is so great I can't believe I didn't know about these fantastic resources!! XD

I am going to try the heading

Adding a Heading

OK..testing...testing..is this how?
←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:

This is all very interesting and new to me. But i think the LQT holds a lot of potential especially for someone new to the discussion to catch up and contribute positively rather than take the whole discussion backwards.

Sebastiaan you make an interesting observation and I totally agree with you. I used LQT's in a learning environment before and it is very easy to come up to speed with the content of discussion and to make a contribution. The structure of the LQT's also allows the user to differentiate where the main discssion points are.

←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:
I encountered difficulty with collaborative editing/recent changes tutorial. I was not able to open a new tab. Please come to my rescue.

Mcebisi, how did you create the formating in your posting above? I can't see from looking at the source.

Hi David

The formatting used for the box is simply to leave a space preceding the text in the editing window.

This creates boxed text

This doesn't (no preceding space)

The format is typically used for highlighting lines of code or syntax instructions. It doesn't work well when wrapping paragraph text.

Cheers

Hi Wayne and fellow participants ...(that is if you are still at my stage of catching up!)

I am finding this workshop quite useful...completing the activities brings back long forgotten memories of my first year as an undergraduate when I took a course on Introduction to Programming...that was back in 1985, when the equipment and language were quite ancient given the part of the world in which I am located.

I am trying to complete this and the instructions for Day 10 by the end of today...I have also to go clean up my user page and there are meny items there that belong in My Sandbox.

←In reply to Testing a reply (1) by Mackiwg, above:

This has been a very exiting and interesting journey for some of us who are Newbies in this area of collaborative content development. However I find the text formating tools above inadequate as they do not contain all the basic formating tools. The use of a cheatsheet is very confusing to new entrants and I believe it requires that a more comprehensine formating tool set be developed to make working with wikies as simple as working on a wordprocesor application. That would actually make it more comfortable for ordinary content creators/writers who are non-technical to actually work with.

Good morning, Mac, if I might be so bold as to call you that. I believe I may have some right to do so since that was the name that my students and friends used to call me when I taught school here many years ago. You see, it is difficult for Akan speakers to hear and/or pronounce the letters L and R, especially when they come together as the do in the name McLaren. Well, as you can see, I am enjoying this session, and looking forward to others who may be doing the same. Nana

I have been meaning to ask what language is Akan?

I appreciate this idea of using Wikis to contribute to knowledge base. I have recently developed keen interest in open source software and issues related with it. I am a lecturer and l am looking forward to establishing content that l can post on the wiki. It is still a cloudy issue together with E-Learning. I hope to reduce the blur by the time l am done with this training.--Kimani Njoroge 02:59, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

I am at a similar late point in the workshop, writing this on day 10 and running about 2 days behind, working through day 8 content today, but I have an overwhelming feeling this was a good choice to undertake this workshop. I have 3 teaching or quasi-teaching jobs and am taking a series of online courses, and I feel a new focus and skill about how to manage these experiences and responsibilities with the web and OER that includes but goes beyond the project I am "officially" doing for the workshop. I even have an idea for a political wiki project aside from my educational endeavors and have researched where political wikis might be hosted.

Hello everybody,

This is part of Tutorial 8, so here I am leaving a message on this thread.

I find this tool pretty nifty in the wiki!

Reading through the comments in the thread, I think that this is also a good tool to get people practising editing input from other people. My learners rarely want to edit the work of others directly but are happy about leaving comments (like in pbwiki comment feature) and so using this thread tool would be like a 'soft introduction' to this 'participative editing culture'.

For example, I'm randomly copy/pasting a comment already posted in this thread, then editing it as a model for ELT learners:

Newbies were Folk were not sure where to place their reponses,
# Derekc (Talk | contribs)
  1. 22:19, 18 October 2007

and would suggest that it reads better as

Newbies were folk who were not sure where to place their reponses,

After this stepping stone, learners could then be encouraged to make direct edits to content pages.

My question now is: I have just copy/pasted the source in the thread to take the reader back to the original author and date of posting. Is there a better way to do this in this thread? --Mowik 10:26, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Moodle assistance (1)

There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.

I would like to find out from colleagues out there if there are experts who can give some assistance on the material production side. May be a user friendly manual if available could be of help. We are a distance learning institution trying to convert some of our print material into e-format using this open source CMS. The institution has decided to adopt moodle as its content management platform because it also has a facility to develop content with and even convert already existing content. We have had some assistance from one of our sister or brother institutions with downloading and installation of the system on our server environment.

Hi, I am replying to my first thread...pretty cool, but decided to reply to yours as I am an avid Moodle User. We have been using it at school for two years. It is possible to upload your existing files (if they are word, powerpoints, pdf's) etc. straight into Moodle or you can author material in Moodle itself. If you have any questions or need help then please send a message and I will try and help. Jacqui

Hi Tsemane

I'm Miems Louw from Namibia. I'm replying to your thread because we in the same boat. We at NAMCOL are also involve in an OER Project with COL. We are converting the print-based material into online material using Moodle. I find it quite challenging but also interesting.

I am beginning to acquaint myself with Learning Management Systems (LMS).
So far, l am aware of Dokeos and Moodle. Have you or anyone else used both and had a feel of the difference?
I would not mind a detailed technical explanation. --Kimani Njoroge 02:38, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Using Hotpotatoes on Wiki Educator (1)

There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.

HotPotatoes like wiki educator propates free use of their application. Can we upload hotpotatoes quiz on user page? Should we not?

No -- we can't upload hotpotatoes quiz's on wiki educator pages because this is non-free / proprietary software which does not meet the requirements of the free cultural works definition. Sorry about that -- but we do not determine the licenses of external services. If they used free software and free content licenses there would be no problem to include these in WikiEducator.

Cheers Wayne

Is E-Learning up for the Challenge of Meeting Students' Future Educational Needs? (2)

There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.

As districts face the issues of addressing budget short falls, meeting student academic performance needs based on NCLB, improving teacher quality, developing infrastructure and leveraging technology investments, it is no wonder that more and more school districts are viewing e-learning as a potential cost effective way to deliver student instruction.

In the past, online courses mostly catered to students that were looking to pursue additional credits, advanced placement courses or classes that were not locally available; however, the focus has changed over time as online education has grown and evolved. Now virtual courses have expanded and are growing in popularity for struggling students as a credit recovery method.

At the same time, school districts and educators who once felt online education was not as effective as traditional teaching are now embracing it as having the potential to meet their budgetary needs and produce acceptable results.

States, such as Maryland and Florida, view their extensive virtual course offerings as being cost-effective ways to get high-quality coursework to more students.

Though online learning may be more cost-effective, is it equal or better? The debate on that question has acquired new urgency, as schools look for ways to keep or expand their course offerings while also controlling or cutting costs during the current recession. In the existing economic environment and with the continued emphasis on academic accountability, is expansion of virtual classrooms the answer?

How will the expansion of E-learning into the K-12 market change the nature of education for our children in the future? Will it be ready?

Science fair (1)

There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.

This year we are going to stage our 11th science, mathematics and technology fair. I am interested in hearing from anyone involved in holding science fairs this year. Prior to the national fair there would be district fairs.

Can some one share ideas such as fair guidelines, rules and other matters related to ascience fair for schools?

looking to hear from you!

Jervis!

It's good that you have an activity like that in your school. I envy you. We also have an activity like that in our school but what I don't like is that the investigatory projects made by our students are copied from textbooks and from the Internet. Maybe you could ask your students to do some investigatory projects which are actually new and never been heard before or I would say new inventions. You can also play some compact discs, Blu-ray discs or DVDs of movies or television or cable shows related to Science and technological inventions and Mathematics. Just my suggestions. Though I am a Social Studies high school teacher.

This year my school participated in the national science fair. We got students to look at the theme and first come up with an original proposal. they looked at time lines, feasiblity of the project and then they presented their proposals at the end of the first semester. the best ones were then choosen to actually carry out the project for the fair. Some needed improvement and rethinking and we gave them that opportunity. In the end we got some really original projects that were relevant to our society. The students also enjoyed the experience.

Planning on Developing Online Modules (1)

There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.

Hi, everyone. I am planning to develop online modules for teaching Philippine Geography, History and Government for First Year High School students and the objectives of which are to help increase the level of student academic achievement in that particular subject through integration of e-learning in teaching this subject and to develop the sense of nationalism among the students and to develop in the students the love for learning their country's history and culture. These are the things that I plan to do: 1. Develop individual lesson plans or working plans complete with classroom activities to do. 2. Continuously attend trainings and seminars related to e-learning. 3. Develop the needed software for these modules. Tap the technical expertise of teachers who are teaching Computer subjects. 4. Coordinate with the school principal, the Technology and Livelihood Education Head Teacher and with the Computer teachers regarding the use of the computer laboratories for classroom instruction. 5. Or better solicit support from local government officials and the private sector for computers that can be used solely for classroom instruction (for classroom use only). 6. Pilot-test the modules. 7. Invite the City Schools Division Superintendent, Assistant Schools Division Superintendents, Social Studies Division Supervisor, the School Principal, the Social Studies Head Teacher and the school's Teacher-Mentor to observe my classes. 8. Get feedback from the students. 9. Conduct a research on the effectiveness of the delivery of the content of these online modules. 10. Submit the copy of this research to the above-mentioned people for validation. Your comments, suggestions or feedback here are most welcome because I really need a lot of help especially on the technicalities of doing these online modules. Thank you.

Working hours for teachers (1)

I think it's good to have students get involved in extra-curricular activities, therefore there is a need to extend the school day. what do you think?

I really do not agree with lengthening the school's day. In my school and I am sure in other schools teachers are already doing extra curricular activities with kids after 2:30pm and sometimes are there until 7pm at nights after the kids have left. I personally believe such a change will demotivate teachers from going the extra mile as they would be put in a rigid situation now. Telling me I have to stay until a certain time for these activities and me volunteering are two different things. My humble opinion on the matter.

I thought it may be a good idea to have a separate thread for L4C7 batch to experiment with the discussion. Make sure that you are logged in and post your comments by clicking the reply button below.

I'm a little behind - no wait, a LOT behind lol, but still soldiering on.

Dear Dr.Sanjaya Mishra,

Just now i have seen the tutorial on liquid threads, it is very useful at the time of developing SLM materials. Lot of interactions and share their views with respect to content that has been developed for students those who are coming under DDE.

Thanks for remainder

We may need to consider updating this page to reflect LiquidThreads rather than the old discussion pages. brent 23:32, 8 October 2007 (CEST)

I am just doing as it says: testing a reply. This is my first attempt at communicating in this way, so I am unsure what to do and what to expect, but I have a strong feeling that this may be something useful. Dear colleagues, enjoy your testing!

Just entering this discussion zone in June 2008... The format of this discussion thread seems old-fashioned,is that why Brent made the last comment here about updating the page to reflect LiquidThreads? What does this intriguing term mean? Have you looked into LiquidThreads? Carole

Instead of just replying, (as I was supposed to do), I amtrying starting a new post. My first try appeared at the beginning of the first first thread - which is not what I intended. So I changed the order of appearnace to get the oldest postings appearing first. So mine now appears at the end. Not sure if there is a simpler way.

My Dear,
Sometimes, digressing from instructions help us to learn (ha ha!). Nice job, keep up.
