Profile
My name is Dr. Gita Mathur. I am a reader in Botany in Gargi College, an Undergraduate college of the University of Delhi with over 30 years of total teaching experience. I am a trained Botanist, but over time my interests have diversified – issues related to environment, science education - I strongly believe in free access to educational content and in collaborative learning not only among peers but also between a student and a teacher. Probably due to my long association with the Centre for Science Education Communication, University of Delhi, I like to introduce myself as a ‘science educator’. Besides my academic responsibilities, I spend a lot of time working on innovations in teaching Botany including designing experiments which can be done with minimum facilities. I am very fond of photography, especially close-ups of plants and flowers.

How I Became a WikiEducator
I was fortunate enough to participate in a India/L4C_India_08 workshop sponsored by the Commonwealth of Learning and organised by two WikiEducators - Dr. Savithri_Singh and Mr. Anil prasad.
We were introduced to the concepts of Open source, Open educational resources, the Creative commons licensing, Wikieducator.
The participants understood the value of open source to build educational resources.
The value of wikieducator was rapidly understood and also its user friendliness.

What I Plan TO DO as WikiEducator
- Learn and become familiar with the Syntax for WikiEducator. See some basic editing tips by clicking Editing Tips For WikiEducator
- Interact with the global community of WikiEducators to find others who share my various interests as teacher, Botanist, researcher, educator, poet, photographer...
- Through personal contact and through Workshops get more educators to join hands here.
- Add content to existing topics and start some new ones. I am taking feedback from my students regarding this.
- Expand the WikiEducator community by discussions with persons who have similar ideas on education access to all.
- As a Botany teacher I have learnt a lot of interesting things about the world of plants. Some from my own teachers and others by experience. I will share those with the International Community.
- Teaching and learning by designing new experiments and local examples to understand scientific concepts has been my approach. I will share those as a WikiEducator
