This schedule is part of the Tour Guiding course and is used in the following programme


Schedule

Weeks 1 - 2: ( July 21 - August 1) Leadership

In this unit you will learn how to describe a range of leadership styles, and identify leadership styles for specified tourism contexts; and demonstrate interpersonal skills when leading in a group situation.

You will also begin one of our two local courses in this specialty - Information, Communication Technology, where you get to try out equipment commonly used in tour guiding eg. two-way radios, compass, microphone, video camera, camera, maps etc.

Week 3: (August 4 - August 8) Interpretation

In this unit you will describe the principles of interpretation; describe and compare personal and non personal interpretation. This also incorporates a local course looking at preparing and implementing an interpretation plan for New Zealand attractions, activities and events (focused on our local region)


Week 4: (August 11 - August 15) Hospitality

In this unit (US 14425) you will learn how to prepare and serve hot and cold non-alcoholic drinks, in a commercial environment.

Tuesday

Class at Forth St 9-11am as usual

  • Group One: 1 - 2.30pm - Tennyson St
  • Group Two: 2.30 - 4.pm - Tennyson St


Wednesday

  • Group One 11-2pm - Tennyson St

* Group Two: come to class at Forth St as per usual


Thursday

  • Group Two: 11 -2 pm - Tennyson St

* Group One: come to class Forth St as per usual


Friday

In this unit (US 167) you will learn how to maintain effective personal hygiene when working with food as per establishment requirements; Prevent cross contamination in a food business; measure, record, and act on temperature of high risk food


  • Theory - 8.30am - 4.30pm (approx) - Tennyson St

(meet at reception)

Friday - August 22

  • Practical - 8.30 -12.30
  • Resits (Theory) - 12.30

If you miss any of these Fridays the only way you can complete the unit is through public evening classes.

Week 5: (August 18 - August 22) Natural History and Tour Interpretation

In this local course you will have an introduction to New Zealand's unique geology, climatic zones, wildlife, plants and trees.

Week 7: (September 1 - September 5) Health & Safety

In this unit you will learn how to demonstrate knowledge of risk management theory; explain the health and safety roles and responsibilities of an individual working in a tourism organisation; demonstrate knowledge of the health and safety policies and procedures of a tourism organisation; and identify, record in writing, and take action on potential risks and hazards in a tourism activity.
