My Profile
Amy Tucker
Professional Background
Lifelong Learner and Doctoral Student My name is Amy Tucker. I am currently preparing for my comprehensive exams for my doctoral program in educational leadership, specializing in post-secondary education at Simon Fraser University. I am hoping to finish my dissertation by 2010. I am researching blended learning environments and how educators can use Web 2.0 tools as way of engaging learners in higher education.

The courses I specialize in are Introduction to Organizational Behaviour and Management and Introduction to Human Resource Management. Personal
I live in beautiful British Columbia (BC). I have lived here since 1999.
I consider myself educated and ambitious. I am currently working on my Doctorate of Education (will graduate in 2010) and my TESOL Certificate (so I can teach overseas). In terms of career, I have held various positions from lecturer, instructor, facilitator, career/employment counsellor, program advisor, recruiter, ESL teacher, baker, cook, and even have been known to sling a few donuts back in the day.
I am currently focusing my career on becoming a tenure professor at the university, while working towards an administrative position. My plan is to continue to conduct scholarly research on contemporary topics in adult education in regards to distance education, global communities, organizational behaviour and leadership topics.
When I grow up, I want to be an academic administrator, professor (leadership, business, management, organizational behaviour, and ESL), research academic jargon, write very long, dry text-books (and then sell them to my students), and travel the country promoting my research at conferences/events.
My idea of retirement is volunteering overseas and giving back to the community. If I could live off the grid, I would.

My Projects
Project One:
Amy Tucker “Addressing Adult Learning Needs through Blended Learning Environments”
Blended and hybrid learning environments are increasingly becoming popular as an alternative instructional delivery method for institutions of higher education all over the world. Today’s students have the benefit of taking courses face-to-face (f2f) with an online component, using instructional applications such as Blackboard, WebCT or Moodle. Research indicates that blended or hybrid instruction, described as the combination of online and traditional classroom instruction is the future trend for higher education. Further, an increasing number of post-secondary institutions are using blended learning formats to engage and retain adult learners. The purpose of this presentation is to explore the impact and implications of online and blended (hybrid) learning on adult learners attending institutions of higher education in Western Canada. Specifically, it will provide a literature review, personal observations, and best-practices of instructors who integrate blended learning in their f2f classrooms. The findings will allow practitioners to appreciate and enhance learning opportunities among adult learners in blended learning environments. Finally, lessons learned, continuing challenges and guidelines for practitioners considering the development of such a model will be presented and discussed.
Project Two:
Author: Amy Tucker “Creating Culturally Diverse Virtual Teams” Today’s students have the benefit of taking courses face-to-face (f2f) with an online component, using applications such as Blackboard or Moodle. Research indicates that hybrid instruction, described as the “combination of online and traditional classroom instruction” (Schmidt et. al, 2004) is the future trend for higher education. It is expected more courses will be offered in a hybrid format. Coupled with this factor is the increased number of learning opportunities for domestic and International students working collaboratively in virtual teams. This presentation will provide a literature review, personal observations, and best-practices of instructors who integrate hybrid learning and use virtual teams in their f2f classrooms. The purpose of this research topic is to create a comprehensive analysis of the subject while focusing on how to create culturally diverse virtual teams in the classroom. The results of this research will allow learners (and faculty members) to appreciate and enhance their learning opportunities among culturally diverse virtual teams in the classroom.
