Solids

Class:Form 1

Duration of lesson: 35 mins

Preknowledge

Students should be familiar with:
  • plane shapes such as triangle, rectangle, square
  • the terms vertices, edges and sides

Objectives

Students ahould be able to:
  • Recognize
  • Cube
  • Cuboid
  • Sphere
  • Prisms
  • Pryamids
  • State the number of vertices, edges and sides on each solid.

Resources: Real life examples of solids (Cans, Boxes, Toys, Balls etc)

Set Induction

Activity

Getting students familiar with solids.
  • Split class into groups.
  • Give each group a sample of solids.
  • Allow students to investigate solids.

Discussion

Discuss with students the names of the different types of solids and what is unique about each solid.

Definitions

Discuss the definition of
  • edges
  • vertices
  • sides
(Allow students to make notes.)

Case Study

Let each group discuss the number of edges, vertices and sides of each solid. Allow each group to present their findings to the class.

Assignment

Ask students to create a table with four columns:
  1. Name of solid
  2. No of edges
  3. No of veritces
  4. No of sides
