What is a Matrix?

Matrix is an array of numbers. This array can be in one of the following forms.

  • a single row
  • a single column
  • a square arrangement
  • a rectangular arrangement

The types of Matrices are defined according to the arrangement of their elements

What does this mean to me?

Can you think of a situation where you can use one of the above matrices to present some information?


Let us assume that the following diagram shows the roads connecting three towns "A", "B" and "C". The table shows the number of roads going from one town to the other. If we remove the row headings and column headings, we get a 3 x 3 matrix to represent the road map of the 3 towns.
