Global warming project (1)
Hi Randy,
I noticed you created a page for a project on climate change back in August which has developed into a resource for a specific group. I'm interested in these issues but felt the need for something more general that would help me explore the issues around climate change. So I've started a new project called Global warming and I'm looking for collaborators. Mystictim 18:39, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

You sure deserve the recognition. You have contributed so much to WikiEd and it is much more than your user page (which is great, by the way). --Phil Bartle 09:52, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Randy,
I second the congratulations to you -- much deserved. Your dedication is an inspiration to many! I love your posts to the list. And your user page is a wealth of information.

Randy,
I am honored that you visited my page... it's kinda like having Paul McCartney come to watch you perform at the school talent show or something. I hope my list has value-added... I think it does because every time I find an "extensive" list of free online econ content I find that 95% of is not suitable to base an actual course around. Once I integrate several more lists on it I will try to start publicizing it to econ instructors.
I am finding this to be a great experience ... the world thanks you for all that you have done.
If you have the time I do have a couple of questions...
1. There are obviously network externalities at work with these sights... the more people use them the more valuable they get. So I am wondering what, if any, are the "competing" sights that educators may be visting to connect with each other?
2. How does WE support itself? Is there any chance funding could be cut in the future?
Thanks again.
Cheers,
--Brian Evans 10:03, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Brian,
Ahh, the Paul McCartney reference - sounds great, and I'll hang onto it for awhile! <smile>
Right now, most of the materials are snippets - you're right....but we are moving into the next phase of our strategy....As of May 1, the project has moved to an International Centre for Open Education / OER Foundation based in New Zealand. It is still affiliated with the Commonwealth of Learning. We are moving to a membership model, where we will be seeking to engage with educational institutions (i.e., tertiary education - universities and colleges) to start to have their curriculum development, at least in part, done on the wiki. A cluster of 5 people can generate a minimum return of 30% cost-savings, or reduction in time-to-market. Moreover, there will be considerable networking and joint proposal development opportunities between the partners who share like values, etc.
Regarding your questions, I'm not sure that I understand Q1., so, if you could rephrase, that would be very helpful.
Regarding Q2, at this point, WE has 'supported itself' primarily through the Commonwealth of Learning, in terms of infrastructure support and a full-time project leader. In future, as the OER Foundation gets up and running, there is likely to be 3-5 core staff, with a fairly small annual budget. The organization will be primarily virtual and highly-leveraged, working with WikiEducators around the globe on a project basis. The educational members I spoke above, will provide membership fees to support the core operations, and other projects will be funded through proposal development. If you are interested in a particular project - your own, your groups, or something else, please do let us know, and we'll be happy to provide direction and support for you to obtain financial resources for it. So, the WikiEd project will not fail for budgetary reasons, because right now it is running nicely on a very very small level of funding....Community engagement and ownership is key, and we invite you to become more involved, and invite your friends... <smile> -- Randy Fisher 21:12, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Randy
I've added stuff to [my sandbox] based on my situation analysis done for our Bill Gates grant proposal. Please have a look there as it will help you get a sense of where I was 1 year ago, and how we can bring in the Wiki to realise/modify those rough ideas I had of the way forward. See-I'm getting the hang of collaborating on the Wiki! Thanks! Gurmit

Hi Randy, I spoke to Murani the other day and he mentioned that he had given up the Learning4Content course he was on, because he got far too many e-mails, which seemed of little relevance to him. Hi Randy
I have added some references to http://www.wikieducator.org/OMD/References#Action_Research It is really good that people add to this listing to make it more exhaustive and comprehensive. This would help many educators who are working and supporting teachers to conduct action research.

Hi! I found WikiEducator last year. I was attending an online conference where Wayne Mackintosh presented. I loved the project. I started to contribute in the Spanish site, but I had personal problems that prevented me from continuing working on the site and finishing the wiki course. I am now back online and currently attending Leigh's course "Facilitating online communities" Thanks for your warm welcome! Violeta.
Hi Viovio ~ glad to hear that you were taking Leigh's course ~ how did you find the course? Has it helped you to understand how to use the wiki and online communities more effectively? Randy Fisher 01:24, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Learning WE - Talk pages (1)

Hi Randy, yes, I'm on skype james_neill and happy to chat; BUT when testing out wikis I prefer to use the talk features on the wiki itself; partly as a record for my own learning (e.g., I've had useful IRC chats before but they leave little legacy content for my own and others' learning). It seems to me that the liquid thread stuff messes around the way the way message notification works; e.g., it seems to flag that I have messages when anything is added to a talk page associated with a page on my watchlist!? I'm concerned that if as an experienced wiki user I'm confused, that my students would find it even more confusing. What's your experience with using WE with students in this respect? -- Jtneill - Talk 00:26, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Hi James,
Yes, I understand....I think that the Liquid Threads is a bit buggy in places...I've found myself, that I get messages that are for the overall list, or in reply to something I've forgotten about....
Anyways, the thing is, if I can be of support to you, please don't hesitate - I'll do my best to help, and if I can't I will bring others in....
do yo have specific things that you would like to do, here on this wiki -I know you've talked about it....

One of the great things about working with you is that YOU are so empowering, supportive and open to feedback and collaboration. Since I've known you, you've set the bar with your energetic unflailing commitment to the free software movement - and you've consistently "walked the talk". A fine example for the New Year.

Wow Randy --
I took a more detailed look at the Canada country page. Are you planning to become the exemplar for the world <smile>
Gee --- you even have a how complete is this country page template!!!!!
Great stuff.
Hey Wayne,
Glad to see ryou smile <smile>!!
I believe there are a lot more things happening with regard to WE, than 'appear' on WE...and I want to reflect that....If we have our community members self-reporting what they are doing, then the pages will get populated, and we can help them to make even more connections....and 'feel' the excitement about what is possible, and what we are creating to together...
In a way, it makes WE even more accessible...by delving deeper into...what I like to call "discovering the undiscovered!"
Also, it's a great way for folks to see 'how' they can become involved...I'm looking forward to learning from others....how we can help them, and they can help us!
Thanks for the kudos ~ I appreciate it!

Hi Randy,
You might want to use a different name for your frontpage template - its a bit too generic and runs the risk of another project using the same name.
For the different text feeds on the front page - you may want to use something like:
template:wikigov_fontpage_news
or suitable equivalent.
Again - I'm really very impressed with your wiki skills - this is pretty advanced stuff. You're clearly a wiki natural!

Hi Randy
I've put together a pre workshop activity as part of the Registration Form on the Participants Invitation page. I've tested it by editing my user page through this template format and it seems to work ok. I'll probably catch up with Brent next week and we'll talk over the video idea.
If you're interested there are some changes to the pre workshop activities page. Would appreciate any feedback you might have.

Hi Wikirandy
Hmm....not sure what the correct protocol is for communicating at this level with someone you may be aware of in this forum but have not formally been introduced. I guess I'll just introduce myself. My name is Helena Mill and I am the learning Designer with the eXe development team based down here in New Zealand. Wayne has recently asked me to work on the OER Workshop toolkit and has recommended I get in touch with you.
With the timely topic of DAY 8 on Talk pages I thought I would get in touch and start a discussion about pre-workshop activities for the OER Workshop Toolkit. I've had some thoughts on activities for facilitators, e.g thinking about their own (local) networks that may be tapped into and considering various communication media they might access to gauge commitment and advertise workshop details. I understand from Wayne that you've been thinking about activities for participants. I'm keen to discuss these ideas.
