Thank you Benjamin for your invitation to collaborate. I've visited your page and I found it full of high quality content and activities. I'm interested in America's native minority languages and Mexico is a blessed land with many native languages, some of them with very complex grammar systems. I hope I can go there some time in the future. Congratulations and best wishes from Lima, Perú. --Alejacha 02:15, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello Alejandra. Mexico is certainly rich in culture; hopefully you'll have an opportunity to visit one day. I visited Colombia in '94, and would love to make it over to Perú some day. Take care and am sure we'll be "running into" each other in future collaborative efforts in WE.

Understanding by Design (1)

Ben,

Just wanted to say thanks for your post about Grant Wiggins work re: Understanding by Design. Interestingly, Mr. Wiggins lives not far from me in New Jersey, USA -- but sad to say that most of his offerings are incredibly expensive :( I love the title "Understanding by Design." My library had the older version -- I just checked it out.

I've felt for a long time that education needs to move in a different direction (more accessible, personalized/customized, inherently rewarding for each individual learner -- I agree it's all about the long tail!) and am so excited to find here in wikieducator so many like-minded folks trying to make this happen.

Have you read the book Disrupting Classrooms: How Disruptive Innovation Will Change the Way the World Learns by Clayton Christensen, et. al? I wrote a quick piece on my occasional blog Savor the Differences about Christensen's theory. It seems to me that wikieducator is facilitating the innovation and disruption that Christensen is talking about. Thought you might be interested.

Your Wikifriend, Alison

Hello Alison,

Let me know what you think about the UbD book. I feel that UbD concepts have a strong place in language learning but have come across others that don´t necessarily share my enthusiasm. I'd be interested to know your opinion.

I´ll check out Christensen's book...it looks very applicable in explaining the WE phenomenon.

  • Good to see your user page again, Benjamin. I like the photos, especially that you brought your two boys on to it. Lots of good material. How did you remove the word "User" from your user page? Recommendation (we do not have to be bad to get batter); keep adding more, especially your descriptions of your WikiEd resources and projects, and your personal interests. Perhaps yo could also add a Spanish User page and put a link to it from here. --Phil Bartle 02:30, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. To be honest, I don´t remember how I removed the user name from my main page. I´ll have to look at it again and try to remember what I did.--Benjamin Stewart 17:15, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Ok, Phil, I think I figured out how I removed the "user" from my user page. If you click on the move link located in the page tabs along the top of the screen (i.e., page, discussion, edit, etc.), this will give you the option to rename and thus redirect your User:your name page to some new page.--Benjamin Stewart 03:14, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Ben, Phil -

The User:name space is intended to keep all user pages in the same name space (dedicated area in the wiki)

Moving a User page into the main wiki space -- opens up opportunities for anyone to edit, change a page which is intended for personal use.

I'd recommend keeping User pages in the User namespace.

If you want to get rid of the User in front of your name try this:

{{MyTitle|Write your name here without the User:}}

This force the wiki to display a different title for the page.

Cheers Wayne

Ok, I can breathe again...my user page is back. I lost it for about one hour after adding the following code:

"MyTitle|Write your name here without the User:" (brackets are removed here in order for the code to appear in this message-don´t know why that is however).

I think I can live with the title as is.

Saludos, Benjamin

Wiki errors (1)

I received the following error message today:

Image:Wiki_error.jpg

- first time I've received such an error and am not sure why. Does anyone else receive this error message and does it happen frequently?

It typically happens for the first 15 minutes of every month during system backups/statistics gathering. This problem should go away when WikiEducator moves to its new hosting service. (It may even happen before that since I've just purchased a larger hard disk for my home machine which will allow me to do more of the backup process offline.)

Ok, thanks for the explanation.--Benjamin Stewart 17:12, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
