(Comment.gif: The roles and responsibilities of Administrators are under development by the Workgroup for Administrators --Wayne Mackintosh 05:14, 23 July 2009 (UTC))

WikiEducator administrators are community members who volunteer to assist with additional technical tasks in the wiki. Administrators have access to additional tools and features in the wiki to support their administrative tasks.

Administrators are entrusted community members who help with page deletion requests, monitoring and blocking users in the case of vandalism, or protecting wiki pages in clearly defined circumstances. Administrators are not positions of authority, but entrusted volunteers who support the WikiEducator community in achieving its aims. We encourage users to consider volunteering time in helping the WikiEducator family with this important task.

Since the early days of WikiEducator, administrator privileges have been assigned in good faith to users who have demonstrated a willingness to serve in these roles without any formal approval mechanism or training support. Our impressive growth has encouraged the community to develop guidelines and supporting resources for the roles and responsibilities as community administrators. While administration roles require a reasonable level of wiki editing knowledge, any user who is keen to volunteer their services in supporting the maintenance and administration of our wiki are encouraged to join our team.

Types of Administrators

The classification of Administrators is largely determined by the maintenance and support features offered by the open source Mediawiki software engine used by WikiEducator. The following table summarises the types of users and corresponding features and wiki tools used to support administration of our wiki:

Type of user Overview of user rights
WikiEducator User

WikiEducator requires all users to register an account before receiving editing rights. We have adopted this policy since our inception so that we can comply with the legal attribution requirements of our Creative Commons Licenses. WikiEducator does not permit anonymous edits. Normal users are provided with the following capabilities:

  • To edit all pages in the wiki that are not protected from editing.
  • To upload and overwrite existing images for inclusion in all our pages
  • To create new pages in the wiki
  • To delete the text from any page in the wiki (but will not delete the actual page in the wiki database)
  • To move pages (with the option of moving subpages) in the wiki
Sysops Sysops are provided with additional tools to support their tasks in maintaining our wiki. These include, for example, the ability to:
  • Delete wiki pages from the database.
  • Undelete or restore pages previously deleted.
  • View the edit history of deleted pages
  • Import or export pages from Mediawiki installations where the user holds Sysop rights.
  • Protect pages from editing by users.
  • Editing protected pages.
  • Block users or IP addresses from editing pages in the wiki
  • Block users from using the wiki email feature.

Note: All actions of Sysops are visible to all users on recent changes and the wiki keeps a transparent history of all actions performed in the wiki by our Sysops.

See Special:Listusers/sysop for a list of users in this group.

Bureaucrats Bureaucrats have the same rights as Sysops above, with the added responsibility and capability to:
  • Edit and change existing rights, for example:
    • Awarding Sysop and or Bureaucrat rights to any registered users
    • Removing Sysop rights

Note: All actions of Bureaucrats are visible to all users on recent changes and the wiki keeps a transparent history of all actions performed in the wiki by our Bureaucrats.

See Special:Listusers/bureaucrat for a list of users in this group.

Bots Robots or Bots for short perform systematic or repetitive tasks by automatically or semi-automatically interacting with the wiki. Some features of a bot account are:
  • Be treated as an automated process (bot)
  • Edit semi-protected pages (autoconfirmed)
  • Not create a redirect from the old name when moving a page (suppressredirect)
  • Not have minor edits to discussion pages trigger the new messages prompt (nominornewtalk)

See Special:Listusers/bot for a list of users in this group.
