Community Media is any media, or combination of media, focused on and created by local communities, including radio, TV and newspapers, telecentres and new/online and online media.

Community media often exist in areas often under-served by other communication and information media and are therefore vital services. Community media broadcast in local languages.

"Community Radios" as they are called, are rooted in local contexts, drawing on local community membership for ownership, management, staffing, volunteers and organisational development, and as 'expert' resources on air.

Community media, especially radio, are engaged with their listeners and the wider community, working in culturally-appropriate ways and are unique and important vehicles for learning. Please visit our site and share your feedback.

July

July 3rd and 4th, 2009 - Maraa will be hosting a two day workshop titled "Conceptual Clarity on Community Radio" with COL as a supporting partner. About 20 volunteers from various non profit agencies from all over Karnataka will be participating.

May

May 8-22 May 2009 - World Summit on the Information Society, International Telecommunications Union, in Geneva, Switzerland. Brought to our attention by Al-Amin Yusuph, of UNESCO-Tanzania.

April

• April 26-30 - AMARC (World Association of Community Broadcasters) Annual Conference in Ivory Coast, Africa. Commonwealth of Learning will be hosting two 1-day workshops at the conference, in a new initiative called LearnShare HIV AIDS Africa (comprised of community media practitioners and experts in HIV AIDS Treatment Literacy. Partners include COL, International AIDS Society and EcoNews Africa.
